Hibiscus poeppigii, Fairy Hibiscus is a dwarf, shrubby perennial native to the rockland hammocks of Monroe and Miami-Dade counties. It produces red, bell-shaped flowers that attract hummingbirds, butterflies, and a variety of other pollinators.
Prefers full sun to light shade and requires little care once established. It grows best in moist, well-drained soils, but is moderately adaptable to drier conditions once established. Unlike most of Florida's native hibiscus, it does not die back to the ground in winter, but keeps its leaves and may bloom during any month. It is cold sensitive and will be killed by temperatures below freezing.
Listed as endangered by the state of Florida.
